Meet the diver behind 71 Under Diving - Sharing real footage, honest guidance, and diving insights from my underwater adventures beneath the Surface.
Where does the name come from?
71% of the world's surface is covered in water. Less than 1% of the global population actively scuba dives, which means over 99% of people never get to see first-hand what lies beneath the ocean's surface. That just feels wrong!
I'm Steve, and it's a privilege to spend so much time underwater, dedicated to sharing marine life facts, underwater beauty, and the joy of exploring the ocean one dive at a time.
How It Started
I grew up on the south-east coast of England, in awe of the ocean long before I ever got in it.
I learned to dive many years ago, on wrecks and reefs in mostly poor visibility, and thought it was the most incredible experience of my life.
Through developments in diving science, technology, education, and better travel opportunities, my scuba diving journey has become safer, easier, and more accessible than ever.
From travelling across South-East Asia over the last 10 or more years and having fallen in love with Indonesia, I moved to Bali with my family. A major factor in that decision was my love of scuba diving and growing desire to explore the coral reefs and vast marine life offered throughout this stunning region. For this reason, I thought it only fair to share this journey with you.
What You'll Find Here
Everything on this site is a record from my real dives, real footage, real experiences, real advice. It's built around four things:
Beautiful imagery – Captured images and videos showcasing the beauty of what I see on my dives
Dive site stories – An insight to the dive locations from my experience of multiple dives at my favourite locations
Skill and technique — practical, field-tested tips for better buoyancy, positioning, and reef-safe diving.
Dive theory, simplified — reflections on standards and dive science, explained plainly from my perspective
It's through this website that I extend an invitation to experience my routine dives beneath the surface of our vast planet to explore, appreciate, and learn about the beauty that stays hidden from most people.
Where I Dive
I've come a long way since those first murky dives in the English Channel, diving since in the Mediterranean, North-West Africa, the Red Sea, and now Indonesia.
I dive routinely in the heart of Indonesia's oceanic through-flow, and its most rewarding sites, primarily located around Bali, Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Komodo, bringing real footage and honest stories from those dives straight to you.
